Litter boxes can be can provide unwanted and tricky situations. Your cat wants to feel safe, secure and comfortable- just like we do! More often than not, we tend to place litter boxes in areas which are convenient for us, places that are out of the way, easy to sweep and so on.

Other factors such as how often the litter box is cleaned, the size of the box, the type of litter you use also determines hour kitty’s experience.

So here’s our guide to litter box happiness:

Make sure you are placing the litter box in a space where your cat feels comfortable. Avoid busy areas of the home, as increased traffic and noise can increase anxiety. Generally speaking the three most common areas are a bathroom, kitchen and hallway.

The size of the litter box is vital, your cat must have enough space to plough through the litter as well as space around the box so he/she doesn’t feel restricted. Enclosed litter boxes provide privacy and disguise odours, this is a popular choice.

The type of litter you use can determine whether or not your cat will take a liking to the litter box. There are various options including, wood pellets, gravel, clay, silica gel and many more. It’s important to consider a litter that is absorbent, many people prefer clump-free litter. On occasions it can be trial and error, you may go through a few variants before you establish what your cat prefers.

Keeping the space tidy is something that’s often overlooked. Your cat is a very conscious animal, they are aware of their surroundings and enjoy clean spaces. If the space is unswept or has an odour this can be off putting and eventually a cause for accidents and unwanted littering in places around the home.

The final and perhaps most important point is to be patient. Things may bot always go the way we plan, all cats are different, some many be more anxious than others, and some may be completely comfortable. Your cat is a part of your family and wants to feel so in every aspect, including the privacy, comfort and freedom of its own litter box and space.
